Greetings Delegates and Faculty Members,

The time of the year is here again that I, Keerat Sandhu, Chief of Staff, have the privilege and honour of inviting the esteemed delegates for the seventh edition of The Lawrence School, Sanawar Model United Nations, 2024, i.e., SNAMUN’24.

The justice system and social structure, which we witness around us, has a certain essence and shadow of beauty which is encapsulated in a statement coined by Plato- ‘The degree of a crime is determined by the innocence of the victim.’ It’s a simple statement to comprehend when studied at an individual level. A child, specifically, a baby is the most innocent creature of them all, ergo, any crime committed against a baby is the most horrible of them all. The same principle may apply to the pain that all of humanity feels collectively when we see animal abuse towards cats and dogs. This statement takes on a completely different meaning when studied in an international context. By this argument, it is fair for African nations to launch a full-scale attack against most of Europe and North America due to massive slave trade nearly two centuries ago. It is completely fair for South America to nuke the Spaniards and Portuguese. The Japanese to the Chinese, the Koreans to the Japanese Singaporeans to the Japanese and so many other parties involved in centuries, if not millennia of struggles.

Would this revenge truly be fair to the people who have no memory of these heinous acts committed by their ancestors, who have no connection to them, except for a few drops of shared blood?

Yet, these memories of pain and of bloodshed remain fresh in the minds of those who have suffered and those who are victims and even the descendants of the victims, for the music of pain resonates through centuries longer than the cacophony of plunder.

Therefore, that begs the question: In the world of International Politics, what truly, is the meaning of the word ‘fair’?

This year’s theme ‘Quo Vadimus?’ or ‘Where are we going ?’encapsulates the urgency and complexity of our global state, prompting introspection and action to address pressing issues. The opportunity to organise SNAMUN’24 has filled me with pride immeasurable, since to be able to give an opportunity to intellectuals willing to ponder on the problems that affected our world the greatest. It is imperative for the delegates to pierce the problems created by the new world nabobs and escape from a farrago of distortions to prevent our world from prancing to gentle thanatopsis.

Warm regards,

Keerat Sandhu

Chief of Staff.
